Applause Series reaches 250,000 students and educators
At the Friday, Jan. 14, 2011 performances of Strega Nona: the Musical, the Civic Center of Greater Des Moines will surpass 250,000 students and educators served via its Applause Series. Currently in its 15th year, the Applause Series is a school matinee series featuring professional touring shows for students in grades pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. Jeff Chelesvig, Civic Center President & CEO said, “The Civic Center strongly believes in education through arts and is committed to presenting these world-class performances to school audiences.”
Sigourney Weaver Smart Talk date changed
The producer of SmartTalk Connected Conversations was recently informed by management for Sigourney Weaver that a production change in the filming schedule of her new movie requires her to change the date of her appearance in Des Moines. Originally scheduled for Tuesday, February 1, Ms. Weaver will now appear at the Civic Center on Wednesday, May 18.
Smart Talk Series subscribers may use their original Weaver tickets for the May 18 date. No new tickets will be issued. Series Subscribers are being contacted by e-mail.
Mr. Wonder Boy is coming to the Temple Theater
MR. WONDER BOY, a new play coming to The Temple Theater, stars comedian and storyteller Bob Stromberg, best known for originating the role of “Bobby Bean” in, and co-authoring, TRIPLE ESPRESSO - A HIGHLY CAFFEINATED COMEDY. But this time, he goes solo, taking theater-goers on a captivating journey through life and art in a two-week limited engagement Feb. 16-27, 2011.

As part of The Dance Series, each dance company will offer master class for dancers in the community. This unique artist-to-artist opportunity connects preeminent dancers in the field with those in the Des Moines community.
Designed to best serve the different levels of dancers, there are two levels of master classes being offered:
- Dance students at an intermediate/advanced level will learn basic technique and style of each company, led by dancers of the company
- Dancers at the professional and pre-professional level will take a more in-depth exploration of the company’s technique.
Please note that a basic understanding of dance vocabulary and technique is needed to successfully participate in the classes.
Fee: $15 for tickets holders to the corresponding performance in The Dance Series and $25 for non ticket holders.

Civic Center awarded Partner of the Year
The Civic Center of Greater Des Moines was awarded Partner of the Year at the Greater Convention and Visitors Bureau’s annual celebration on Wednesday, Oct. 27. The GDMCVB celebrated 102 years of serving greater Des Moines by honoring local individuals and businesses that have helped make the last fiscal year a success.
GDMCVB President and CEO Greg Edwards said the greater Des Moines area attracts 2.9 million visitors annual thanks in part to the support and assistance from these community champions.
The Civic Center was one of nine recipients in a variety of categories. Edwards commented when presenting the Civic Center its award, “This year’s winner of the Partner of the Year award is not only a partner of the CVB but also of the community. They play a vital role in the economic health of the community and the product that the CVB has to sell to meeting planners and visitors alike. There are many cities larger than Des Moines that are jealous of the quality of entertainment this partner brings to the community.”
ROCK OF AGES rock Tonight Show!
The National Touring cast of ROCK OF AGES, starring Constantine Maroulis, will make their first national TV appearance on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” on Monday, October 4, 2010. The cast will be accompanied by the ROCK OF AGES band ARSENAL featuring Joel Hoekstra (Night Ranger) on guitar. “The Tonight Show” airs weekdays on WHO (13) NBC at 10:35 p.m.

Dance and Family Series Tickets Mailed
If you ordered a season ticket package to The Dance Series or the Wellmark Blue Cross & Blue Shield Family Series, you should can expect to receive your tickets in the mail in the coming week. The Civic Center Ticket Office mailed all orders placed before Sept. 13. Orders placed after Sept. 13 will be mailed out shortly. If you have not received your order within a week, please feel free to call the Civic Center Ticket Office at (515) 246-2300.
