Tomie dePaola’s cherished Caldecott Honor children’s book about a magical grandmother is the inspiration for this delightful new musical. Strega Nona strives to cure the ills of her tiny Italian town, but real trouble ensues when her magic pasta pot falls into the hands of Big Anthony, her mischievous apprentice. When Big Anthony can't figure out how to turn off the pasta pot, pasta threatens to swallow the entire town! Can Strega Nona save the day? With an energetic and tuneful score and a charming pop-up book inspired set, young audiences will gobble up this satisfying tale.

LITERATURE ALIVE: Connecting Reading and Writing with Theater and Visual Art
Course participants will explore the works of Tomie dePaola and Leo Lionni and learn how to write text and make visual art in the same techniques as the author/illustrators. Participating teachers will have the opportunity to have their students’ resulting work publicly displayed at the Civic Center during the performance. BEYOND THE PERFORMANCE
IN-SCHOOL ARTIST EXPERIENCE: Strega Nona’s World
Local teaching artist Carol Taylor will help students further explore Strega Nona’s pasta-filled world through a variety of activities including movement, songs, and storytelling. The session will culminate with students creating their own “Magic Pasta Pot” puppets. The workshop may even include a visit from Strega Nona herself!
