GRADES 3-6 • CAPACITY 2,000
CIVIC CENTER MAIN HALL
Performance length: 60 minutes
Colombian ensemble Los Llaneros will perform traditional music of Colombia and Venezuela, featuring a large variety of acoustic string, percussion, and wind instruments. This interactive concert will focus on cowboy music from the Llanos (YAH-nos) of the savannas surrounding the Orinoco River, as well as feature music from the coastal and mountain regions of neighboring nations to illustrate how Native American, European, and African cultures have created unlimited musical and cultural diversity in the region. Students will be invited to assist in rhythm-making and singing, will learn about the origins of the U.S. cowboy tradition which started in Latin America, and will gain new awareness and respect for human diversity.

Beyond the Performance:
Music and Culture Workshops
Members of Los Llaneros are available to engage students in workshops that explore music, cultures, and traditions of Latin America. Experience will occur at your school the week prior to the performance. Options include:
A Musical Journey Through Latin America (adapted to all ages, 45-60 minutes) This program offers an overview of Latin American cultures and their folk music, including the demonstration of several instruments and rhythmic styles. Through music and relevant explanations, students will learn more accurate definitions of what “America” is and what “Latin America” is, and they will leave with an understanding of the Native American, Spanish/Portuguese, and African roots of what today is called “Latin America.”
Workshop: Cowboys of the Americas (All ages, 45-60 minutes)
Students are engaged in a program that combines music and visuals to answer the following questions: Where did cowboys come from? What do cowboys do? What is America? What is Latin America? Where in the Americas do cowboys live and work, and what do different cultures throughout the Americas have in common?
$20 per session. Tickets to the Applause Series performance required. To request, contact Michelle at 515-246-2355 or mmcdonald@civiccenter.org.
