NEW YEAR'S EVE POPS: CIRQUE DE LA SYMPHONIE

Cirque de la Symphonie returns to Des Moines’s grandest New Year’s Eve tradition by popular demand. Two years ago they brought a sold-out house to its feet on numerous occasions throughout the evening and they are bringing a brand new program to the Des Moines Symphony for their return. Experience aerial flyers, contortionists, jugglers and strongmen in feats of artistry and strength that will leave you breathless. These Cirque performers come to Des Moines from all over the world and the Symphony accompanies them on stage playing some of the greatest hits of Classical music-from Sabre Dance to the William Tell Overture­- all with special lighting, sound and choreography.  

MASTERWORKS 4: LOVE NOTES
EXPERIENCE... Passion
Feb. 12 • 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 13 • 2:30 p.m.

This program is sure to please everyone over this Valentine's weekend. Experience live, the passion of Romeo & Juliet; hear four different accomplished soloists in two inspiring double concertos; and then - Ravel's hypnotic and rhythmic masterpiece - Bolero - a work like no other for an exhilarating finale.

MASTERWORKS 5: ANH TRIO
EXPERIENCE... Vibrancy x 3
Mar. 26 • 7:30 and Mar. 27 • 2:30 p.m.

The Ahn Trio is one of the most sought after groups today. Their vibrant and electrifying performances have been heralded around the world as the future of Classical music. They perform a truly audience pleasing work composed just for them and then Gershwin’s An American in Paris, famous for its own hardware-taxi horns!

MASTERWORKS 6: ENIGMA VARIATIONS
EXPERIENCE... British Intrigue & Brahms
Apr. 16 • 7:30 p.m. and Apr. 17 • 2:30 p.m.

Sir Edward Elgar’s enigmatic tribute is one of English music’s most colorful and innovative works-who can forget their first hearing of the famous Nimrod variation with its unsurpassed beauty? That and two works by Haydn and Brahms which are among their very best-along with our own gifted and accomplished clarinetists playing a virtuosic showpiece that ends with a lively Polka! 

MASTERWORKS 7 AND SEASON FINALE: RUSSIAN SPECTACULAR
EXPERIENCE... Romance & Rhythm
May 14 • 7:30 p.m. and May 15 • 2:30 p.m.

The season concludes with one of the most beloved and Romantic of all piano works-Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto-played by Russian virtuoso Ilya Yakushev. This concert, which concludes with Shostakovich’s powerful and declamatory Fifth Symphony, famous for its pealing brass finale, will be long-remembered as one of Des Moines’s greatest nights of music.
