Buffalo Soldiers were established as the first official all-black regiments in the U.S. Army in 1866. Based on the powerful true-story of our nation’s longest-lived Buffalo Soldier and veteran of the Spanish-American War, this piece retells the heroic stories of the brave soldiers of the 9th and 10th Cavalries.
In 1996, BUFFALO SOLDIER was one of twelve plays selected as the Best American Plays for Young Audiences, and has been performed at the Pentagon following September 11, 2001.

BEYOND THE PERFORMANCE
- IOWA LIVING HISTORY: BUFFALO SOLDIERS - Take a trip to the Fort Des Moines Museum and Education Center. During this 90-minute interactive program, students will discover how the Buffalo Soldiers came to Fort Des Moines during World War I to train as officers and learn about the significant contributions these soldiers made to Iowa and that nation. Students will tour the Fort Des Moines Museum and engage in hands-on activities to deepen their understanding of the Buffalo Soldiers.
